Like agate, jasper is a composite stone.  A form of quartz that's colored and patterened by impurities in the material.

I've never seen one stone with more variations and sub-types than jasper.  My first encounter with it was in a pendant I got that was purple and pink spotted.  It looked like a flower garden had exploded inside the stone.
